A TREASURED POSSESSION
“And the Lord has today declared you
to be His people, a treasured possession.”
Deuteronomy 26:18
The forty years in the wilderness had
been rough on Israel. The older generation that balked at entering
the promised land had all died, and a new generation had sprung up to worship
God and teach others about Him. In the
wilderness, there had been rebellion and a falling away from some significant
religious practices. Before they could
enter the promised land under general Joshua, Israel was reminded of God’s law
and the religious and social regulations God wanted them to follow to ensure
they understood what it means to “Love the Lord your God will all your heart
and your neighbor as yourself”. God not
only wanted them to have the land and all the blessings it contained, but He
wanted them to have life and to have it be an exceedingly abundant life. He also made sure that they understood that
all the discipline and all the rules were in place because of His great love
for His people.
When people disregard God’s laws and
suffer the consequences for it, it is important for us in the church to point
out that in spite of our shortcomings, God still views
His people as a “treasured possession.”
Does your life and do your actions
and reactions tell the world that our God views His people
As “treasured
possession”?
