Facing Facts with Faith

THIS ONE THING I DO

Philippians 3:13

The Apostle Paul, who penned this letter, knew that having your mind in too many places at the same time makes for disaster when you are seeking to serve God in the area that matters most to Him.  In order to be focused and do your best, you have to have your mind uncluttered.

Earlier in the chapter, Paul talked about his religious upbringing (Philippians 3:5,6) and in Philippians 3:12 he shares with us about his quest to be a holy man before God.  Even though he had made great strides in that area, it wasn’t his main focus.  He lays aside other things in order to concentrate on the main thing God had for him to do.

Paul realized that neither his religious background, not his striving to live a holy and blameless life before the Lord, were grounds for knowing he was going to heaven (Philippians 3:7-9).  Paul knew salvation came through faith in Jesus Christ and in His death on the cross, which paid for our sins.  Paul forgot about his past religious successes and failures, and concentrated on the one thing that mattered most, what Jesus had for him to do now.  You can learn from Paul by clearing your mind of other distractions, and seeking direction from Him.  If you aren’t sure of what God wants you to do, ask Him to reveal it to you.  Spend time reading your Bible and praying.  Then step back, look objectively at where you are and where God seems to be taking you.  Don’t be afraid to ask a strong believer, who is objective, to help you.  Religious business and life’s distractions can often obscure the best that God has for you.

Relax, simplify your life, and be able to say with the Apostle Paul, “…this one thing I do”.
